Falling Way Back into Fall

Sunday, September 12, 2010 8:00:26 PM EDT

Its been beyond busy this past spring and summer for yours truly, from our beautiful wedding in June, our memorable honeymoon in Paris and trips to Cape Cod, Sonoma in California and Chicago to celebrate holidays and weddings with family and friends.  As I have been hopping on and off airplanes, I have been less than faithful to the Bluebird Candy Dish Co. blog.  I am back now and just in time for my favorite time of year.  The produce at the market is beginning to change and so are the colors along the Colorado landscape.  We are ramping up to fall and I could not be more excited!  Fresh apples, from Granny Smith to HoneyCrisp, cinnamon tea and a snap in the air.  I love it!  At Bluebird, we are celebrating fall with a new plum-colored candy dish decorated with leaves and grapes - the Penelope.  Paired with candy straws in flavors such as Root Beer, Orange and Green Apple, the Penelope candy dish is the new fall staple alongside rich pumpkin pies.  Happy raking and apple peeling!  ♥ Maggie

Is it Spring Yet?

Monday, February 22, 2010 8:47:02 AM EST

Enough of this winter business already!  At Bluebird, we are saying so long to snow, chattering teeth and multiple layers.  Instead, we are welcoming longer, leafy spring days with open arms.  We are celebrating (an impending) spring with the Camille, a new cabbage-inspired candy dish.  The Camille is made in Pennsylvania and comes in both garden green and iceberg white.  While we have visions of our own backyard garden in our head, for now, as the snow swirls, the Camille candy dish is the perfect spring substitute.

Trendy Treats and Flashback Favorites

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 9:29:43 PM EST

Who knew nostalgic treats could be so trendy?  This week a panel of food experts at the 35th Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco chose nostalgic foods as one of the top five food trends of 2010.  All types of treats - from Baked Alaska to fondue to tang "drunk by astronauts" (as it was advertised) - transport us to the past and inspire sweet, rosy memories.  Every time I come across a cream cheese Jello mold, I instantly flash back to visiting my grandparents in Bedford, Indiana as a child.  Long before I learned about sushi and premium coffee, my favorites included Orange Crush soda, Jolly Rancher sticks (not the pieces), Now & Later's and Nerds candy.

My most adored delight in the 1980s had to have been Bonkers, a Starburst-like candy made by Nabisco.  Bonkers commercials, the popularity of which often eclipsed the candy itself, would feature a random uptight character of sorts.  This character would bite into a Bonkers candy only to then have a giant piece of fruit (such as a tree-sized strawberry) fall from the sky, knocking them into hysterical laughter.  A voice would then declare: "Bonkers.  It Bonks You Out!"  Not only was the candy delicious and the commericals hilarious, but Nabisco managed to make "bonks" into a verb with their ad campaigns claiming that "Bonkers! Fruit Candy bonks you out of this world!"  Pure genius!  Unfortunately, despite the charming commericals and clever ad campaigns, Bonkers was eventually discontinued which absolutely bonks me out.

What treats take you back?  With luck, you'll see your favorites back on store shelves this year.  ♥Maggie

White Christmas & White Chocolate

Saturday, December 19, 2009 12:37:02 PM EST

Fill your candy dish this week with what can only be described as the least time consuming, most crowd pleasing holiday treat: White Chocolate Holiday Party Mix.  From the Winners Cookbook, Junior League of Indianapolis, this recipe is simply delightful!

Ingredients:
1 lb. white chocolate
3 C Rice Chex cereal
3 C Corn Chex cereal
3 C Cherrios cereal
2 C stick pretzels
2 C dry roasted peanuts
1 (12 oz. ) package M&M plain candy

Directions:
Slowly melt white chocolate on top of double boiler over simmering water.  Do not melt in a microwave oven.

Combine Rice Chex, Corn Chex, Cherrios, pretzels, peanuts, and M&M's in a large bowl.  Slowly pour chocolate over mixture and stir to evenly coat.  Spread the mixture on wax paper and cool.  Break into small pieces.  Store in airtight container and refrigerate to keep fresh.

Enjoy!

Mad Men & Bluebird: A Candy Dish for Every Mad Men Dress

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 12:49:04 PM EST

Who doesn't love the pretty, pristine styles of the women of Mad Men?  Betty's cupcake silhouettes, Joan's jewel-toned sheaths, Peggy's pretty, professional styles and Trudy's colorful, fashion-forward frocks.  For every Mad Men dress style, there is a complementary Margaux-Louise candy dish.  The character of Betty Draper is most certainly a bright and beautiful white Margaux-Louise.  Joan Holloway, with her red hair and moss green dresses, is a bold and striking stem green Margaux-Louise.  Peggy Olson, innocent and lovely, is easily an aquamarine Margaux-Louise.  Finally, Trudy Campbell, with her sparkle and exuberance, is definitely a happy, enthusiastic canary yellow Margaux-Louise.

What's your Man Men & Bluebird style?
